REV. JOHN T. SEELEY was born in Carlisle, N.Y., January 5, 1814, and died December 24, 1903. He was educated at Hamilton, N.Y., spending eight years in the institutions at that place, and graduating from the college in 1839 and from the seminary in 1841. His first pastorate was at Port Richmond, Staten Island, where he was ordained September 8, 1841. In 1844 he began his remarkable pastorate of the Sixth Street church of New York city, during which he baptized between 400 and 500 persons. He was also pastor at Dundee, Syracuse, Lima, Newark, Clifton, Massena, Webster, and Pittsford, N.Y. The winter months of seven years he spent at DeLand, Fla., during which time he acted as stated supply at DeLeon Springs. He moved to Pittsford about twenty-one years ago and served five years as pastor of the local church, but resigned upon reaching his seventieth birthday. He acted as supply during the pastor’s absence and taught his Bible class until within two weeks of his death. He was permitted to enjoy many seasons of revival, baptizing during his lifetime more than 1,100 persons. He was closely associated with all the enterprises of the denomination for more than sixty years, and for thirty-six years was a member of the Board of Managers of the State Missionary Convention. Mr. Seeley was affectionately known among his brother ministers as “Father” Seeley. At the close of the obituary report one year ago, he was one of those who made remarks.
