Prominent Utahn Dies on Fishing Trip
Funeral services for John H. Seely, 65, prominent Utah cattleman, who died suddenly last Saturday while on an outing trip at Fish lake, will be held from the North ward meeting house, at Mt. Pleasant, Wednesday at 3 p.m. Relatives of the deceased man live in Salt Lake left today for Mt. Pleasant.
Mr. Seely was a veteran of the Black Hawk Indian war. He was the owner of the largest herd of Rambouillet sheep in the world. He also owned large herds of registered cattle.
Mr. Seely served as mayor of Mt. Pleasant and at one time was city marshal when that city was young. He was a member of the state senate of Utah for two terms, a director of the Utah state fair board for sixteen years, and supervisor of the livestock at the Utah state fair for a number of years.
Mr. Seely’s parents were Justice Wellington and Clarissa Jan (Wilcox) Seely, who were among the early residents of Salt Lake having come to Utah in 1847. They went to San Bernardino, Cal., as pioneers in 1851, but were called back afterward to Utah in 1859 and were sent to Mt. Pleasant among settlers who established that city and community.
His wife and the following children survive him: Mrs. O.E. McGaen, Mrs. Albert Merrill, Mrs. Louie Miner, J. Leo Seely, Leonard J. Seely, Mrs. Robert H. Hinckley, Mrs. Vern Winters, Chesley and Oliver Seely.
