James H. Seeley

(1844- 1919)

Death of J.H. Seeley

James H. Seely (sic) died August 19, at his home in Farmington, Tioga county, Pa., at the age of 75 years and 4 months. He was born April 17, 1844, in Farmington, where he had lived most of his life. His parents were Geo. G. and Julie Morris Seely. There were four brothers and one sister of the family of children. The sister, Mrs. Mariah VanDusen, of Osceola, survives, she being the mother of J.D. VanDusen, our neighbor.

He married Miss Annah E. Clark June 13, 1869, and commenced housekeeping in their present home 50 years ago. To them were born two daughters, Minnie B., deceased, and Phebe A., wife of Deacon Ernest D. Rice, of East Chatham.

He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Phebe A. Rice, and three granddaughters. He enlisted in the civil war in Co. H. 207th Pa. Vols., and served with honor from August, 1864, to the following June, when the company was mustered out. While there the exposure and privation impaired his health.

Early in life he made a confession of faith in Christ, uniting with the Baptist church. Many relatives and friends gathered in token of remembrance and tribute of respect to the deceased, and to express comfort and sympathy to the “companion” of those many years of wedlock and kindred of the home ties. The services were held Friday at 2 o’clock at the home, conducted by Rev. H.H. Reann. Then he was affectionately laid to rest in the family plot in Fairview cemetery at Butler Hill by undertaker A.W. Kear, of Keenevville, to await of summons of resurrection of which we believe shall come to all. – L.C.E.
