Helen Marie Seeley

(1912- 1987)

Services for former Anchorage resident Helen Seeley, 75, will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Seattle.

She died Nov. 22, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle.

Born Aug. 22, 1912, in Seattle, she moved to Alaska in 1916 with her parents, pioneers Ann and Ray Larson.

Her father bought one of the first commercial lots in Anchorage and established a glass and hardware store located at the present day site of the downtown district courthouse.

She attended school in Anchorage, except for the last three years of high school when she went to Holy Names Academy in Seattle. She also attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She was remembered in Evangeline Atwood’s book “Alaska USA” as the first queen in the university’s Queen of the May pageant.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Lawlor Seeley, in 1974. Dr. Seeley was the second dentist to practice in Anchorage.

Mrs. Seeley moved to Seattle in 1954.

She leaves her four daughters, Joanne Hodel and Theresa Waldock, both of Anchorage, Marilyn Hasenoehrl of Bellevue, Wash., and Yvonne Everett of Moraga, Calif.; three sons, James, of Anchorage, John, of Olympia, Wash., and David, of Moraga, Calif.; and 23 grandchildren.

Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Burial will be at Calvary Memorial Park in Seattle.
