Charles J. Seeley, 50, Sheriff 4 Years, Dies

Charles J. Seeley, 50, peace officer of Morgan county for the past 10 years and sheriff for the past four, died at the Brush Community Hospital late Thursday afternoon.

Sheriff Seeley had undergone an operation in Denver for cancer the last of July and had been believed recovering. He had been at the office Monday and at that time was feeling all right. He lapsed into a coma Wednesday night and was taken to the hospital.

He was born Nov. 19, 1906 in Webster City, Iowa. His parents had started a homestead 20 miles southwest of Limon and following his birth, he and his mother moved onto the place.

Seeley was married to Pearl Lee in 1928 in Limon. In 1935, they moved to Corvallis, Ore., where he was a bus driver for the Oregon Motor Stage for about five years. They moved to Brush in June of 1946 where Seeley went to work on the police force.

Seeley was appointed a deputy under Sheriff Sam Pedersen and held that office for three years. He was elected on the Democratic ticket to the office of sheriff four years ago and was unopposed for reelection two years ago when he was reelected for a four-year term.

Seeley was a member of the Fort Morgan Elks lodge, the National Peace Officers and the National Sheriff’s organization.

Besides his wife, Seeley is survived by two sons, Leslie Glenn of Denver and Darrell Wayne with the United States Navy stationed at San Diego; two daughters, Alberta Nadyne Legere of Madawaska, Maine and Elaine Wallace of Denver; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Seeley, of Fort Morgan and one brother, Jay, of Corvallis.

Funeral services in charge of Frezieres Funeral Home, will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Presbyterian church in Fort Morgan with Rev. F.L. McCormick officiating.
