Seelye, John

d. 17 Jan 1813, Lindley, Steuben Co. NY.
m. 9 Mar 1783, Black River, Morris Co., NJ, Elizabeth Lindsley (b 17 July 1764; d 25 Jan 1852). Daughter of Col. Eleazer Lindsley. After John Seelye’s death, Elizabeth m 2nd, 30 Jan 1815, Peter Campbell (d Aug 1836). She then applied for pension as widow of John Seelye.
Soon after John and Elizabeth’s marriage, they removed with Col. Lindsley to Western part of New York. They were some of the first settlers of Lindley (A mistake was made in the official spelling of this town which was named after Col. Lindsley), Steuben Co., NY. John Seelye was a prominent Mason.
John Seelye was a private under Col. Bradley. Enlisted 1775. In service six years at Litchfield, CT. Was Orderly Sergeant at Battle of Monmouth, NJ. Discharged 1 Mar 1780.
From Seelye’s in Service to America, Colonies, and States:*
Captain John Seely of Morristown, NJ. was in company with Colonel Eleazer Lindsey on his prospecting tour through the Genesee County in 1789. He returned with him and also came back with the colony in 1790. He married the colonel’s daughter, Elizabeth.
