250th Anniversary of the Signing of the Decleration of Independance!

Recognizing Seeley Participation in the Revolutionary War

To mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the establishment of the United States of America, a national “America 250” commemoration has taken shape featuring numerous celebrations across the country in 2026.

For its part in the commemoration, the Seeley Genealogical Society (SGS) is collecting information from its members to highlight the Revolutionary War service of our Seeley Ancestors. The Society will share this information with the public on the SGS Website and SGS Facebook throughout 2026.

Revolutionaries, Continentals, Rebels, Whigs (Patriots)...
...Tories, Royalists, King's Men (Loyalists)

Seeleys of the American Revolution

Patriots, Loyalists, Neutrals, and shades in between; our colonial Seeley ancestors experienced the American Revolutionary War - a war that was both a revolution and a civil war.  Many directly participated in the war, whether as a patriot or a loyalist.  Some were not involved in the fighting but had their predilections.  All had their reasons for whichever side they swayed.  Ultimately, the loyalists prevailed and the United States of America was born.

Who were these patriot, loyalist, and neutral but vested Seeleys?  What was their fate?  How are you connected to them?  Family history shapes it's descendants; shapes all of us into who we are today.  Knowing and sharing information about the Seeleys who served during (or in some other way participated in) the American Revolutionary War is another piece of this historical puzzle.

The Society has taken an initial stab at identifying Seeleys who participated in the war effort by pulling together information from three sources:

  1. Names and ancestor numbers of Seeleys contained within the archives of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
  2. Names, data, and SGS ancestor numbers available from the SGS publications which list Seeleys descended through seven generations from Robert Seeley (SGS#1) and Obadiah Seeley (SGS#4).
  3. Narrative information about the Revolutionary War service of Seeleys included in a draft manuscript compiled by SGS member Martin Seelye entitled “Seelye’s in Service to America, Colonies, and States".

The result is a list of names outlining the details of the lives and military service of Seeleys during the Revolutionary War era.  The collected names and information are on the Society’s can be accessed below.

Sharing This History

Periodically during 2026, we will highlight the information and stories of select Seeleys of the American Revolution on the website, through Facebook, and in the newsletter.

Important: If uploading more than one file by drag and drop or by clicking on the "Upload a file" link, select all files at once. If you upload one file at at time it will replace the file before it rather than add the new file. It's weird, I know.
