David S. Seeley, 85Educator and lawyer

David S. Seeley, educator and lawyer, died peacefully on Oct. 30, 2016, at age 85, in Staten Island, N.Y.Dr. Seeley was born in New York City in 1931 to Nathaniel Stevens Seeley and Louise Talbot Seeley. His brothers, Frank, Thomas, and Clinton, have all passed. Anna Mae (Mae) Menapace, beloved wife of 52 years, died in 2008. Dave and Mae are survived by their children, Nathaniel, Sarah Mitchell, Anne, Mary, Louise, and grandchildren, Alexander and Nathaniel Seeley Jr., Travis and Clinton Mitchell, Elizabeth and James Ainsworth.David had a long and influential career in education reform, after earlier years working as a lawyer for civil rights and school desegregation. For many years, he was a professor at CSI, School of Education. David sang with Christ Church Choir, and Richmond Choral. He loved to sail, and restored the family’s 1845 home, which was a gathering spot for family and friends. David and Mae were active in their community, supporting various cultural, and other, organizations.David’s mind was sharp and his spirit strong until the very end. The family would like to thank his home-care team, University Hospice of SIUH, SIU Hospital, and Beth Israel Hospital.Memorial service is Saturday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. at Christ Church, 76 Franklin Ave., Staten Island, N.Y., followed by a reception and memorial program at the church. Burial of ashes is Sunday, Nov. 27, at 10:30 a.m. in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn. CSI will hold a memorial event Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. at CSI Library.
