Elmer Ellis Seeley

Elmer Ellis Seeley, 87, of Columbus, passed from this life at 2:33 p.m. Thursday, December 5, 2019 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Mr. Seeley was born September 9, 1932, in Coles County, Illinois, the youngest child of Robert and Lula Hobbs Seeley.

On August 14, 1959 at the First United Methodist Church, Elmer married Opal L. Adams; she survives.

Mr. Seeley was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He served on the USS Leyte and was honorably discharged May 31, 1955.

Earlier in life, Mr. Seeley worked at Purity Milk Company and at the Marathon Station on 8th Street.

From 1963-1996, Mr. Seeley was a service technician for Sears. After his retirement from Sears, he was a crossing guard at Clifty Creek Elementary School.

Mr. Seeley was a faithful member and a former head usher at the Columbus Free Methodist Church. He was an advocate for veterans and a volunteer at Clifty Creek Elementary. He enjoyed working on cars and would work on anybody’s lawn mower or washer and dryer that needed his help. Mr. Seeley loved animals and enjoyed feeding the birds, squirrels and his stray cat.

Mr. Seeley is survived by his wife of 60 years, Opal; his son, Jeff (Gretchen) Seeley of Columbus; grandchildren, Melanie (Zach) Haggard of Greensburg and Ryan Seeley of Columbus; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Mr. Seeley was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and two sisters.

The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, December 9, 2019 at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street; Reverend Jane A. Noblitt and Pastor Luke Maggard will officiate.

Family and friends may gather for visitation from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 12 p.m. until service time Monday.

Mr. Seeley will be laid to rest at Garland Brook Cemetery with full military rites presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to Columbus Free Methodist Church.
