George M. Seeley Succumbs at 78
LONG BRANCH – George M. Seeley, 78, of 15 Wardell Place died yesterday in Monmouth Medical Center.
Mr. Seeley was born in Houlton, Maine, and was a retired teacher in the Long Branch School system, where he headed the Science Department.
He had been a resident here 50 years, and attended the First Baptist Church.
In his career, he also coached baseball, basketball and football at the school, and was one of the founders of the YMCA Baseball League here. Mr. Seeley also taught emergency crash courses instituted in Long Branch High School in World War II.
In the summer, Mr. Seeley was a health officer for the Long Branch Board of Health for many years.
Mr. Seeley was a World War I veteran and his main interest, besides teaching, was ornithology. He was past president of the Urner Ornithological Club of Newark and a current member and past president of the Monmouth Nature Club of Eatontown.
Many Boy Scouts in the area owe their birding badges to help they received from Mr. Seeley, and many adults in the area remember his series on nature at the Red Bank Adult School.
He also gave nature talks to grade school students after his retirements from teaching.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ianna E. Bonoparte Seeley; two sons, Mervil J. Seeley of Atlanta, Ga., and Lt. Cmdr. Howard G. Seeley of Fairfax, Va., three daughters, Mrs. Alice Davidson of New Milford, Mrs. Lois West of Oceanport and Mrs. Betty Fonataro of Oakhurst; a brother, John Seeley of Tampa Fla., two sisters, Mrs. Samuel Glines of Portland, Maine, and Mrs. Eleazer Clark of Springfield, Mass.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Flock Funeral Home.
