Edwin C. SEALEY

HAMPTON – Edwin C. Sealey, 87, a resident of Hampton and husband of the late Gladys ‘Tootsie’ Bruce Sealey, passed with grace from this life on March 22, 2011, surrounded by what mattered most, his family at Sentara Careplex Hospital, Hampton.

Born on April 26, 1923, in Elizabeth City County, now Hampton, he was the son of the late Mallory M. and Lillian Mae Gatewood Sealey.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Earl M. Sealey and Mallory M. Sealey.

He is survived by a son, John Lee Sealey and his wife, Suzanne; daughter, Gail Sealey Stockman and her husband, Patrick; four grandchildren, David Lee Sealey, Rebecca McHugh, Michael McHugh and his wife, Karen and Patrick Nathan Stockman and his wife, Roxanne; one brother, Joseph A. Sealey; three sisters, Geneva S. Ashe, Marie W. Becker and Vivian S. Landrum; and sister-in-law, Vernell Sealey.

As a child growing up, Edwin was raised on the family farm. He joined the U.S. Army on Oct. 13, 1943, to serve his country during WWII, like so many other heroes at that time. His tour of duty sent him to the Philippines as a member of the 132 Infantry, Company E, American Division. He served as a scout, which earned him a Bronze Star. After returning home, he entered the apprenticeship at NACA, now NASA, Langley Research Center, where he worked as a production controller for 33 years until his retirement on August 29, 1980. He continued working in the private sector for 10 years. He was a lifelong and faithful member of Liberty Baptist Church. He was a devoted and loving husband in marriage for more than 57 years. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to the mountains and many cross country trips over the years. He was a proud and loving father and grandfather to his final breath. His family knows he has joined his wife in Heaven, but they will miss them both for all time.

The Sealey family extends their gratitude and appreciation to the doctors and nursing staff at Sentara Careplex Hospital for the compassionate care they provided during his final days.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 25, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 26, at Peninsula Funeral Home with the Pastor Joe Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to the building fund for Liberty Baptist Church, 1021 Big Bethel Rd., Hampton, VA 23666.
